highly stressful situation

thanks to baileys’s little problem, we had to give both her and fatso medicine. they came in tablets. huuuge tablets, about the same size with average painkillers for human.

smartipants that we were, we decided straight away that the best way to force them to eat the meds was by crushing the tablets into powder and mix it with their favourite wet food.

ha! they walked away from the food. baileys tried a bit but even she walked away from it. we took away their dry food, hoping they would be hungry enough to eat the medicated wet food. no such luck.

we decided that it wasn’t going to happen and we were going to have to go out and get the meds again the next day. and this time, we would do some research on the internet on proper way to feed meds to cats.

we found plenty of tips and tricks online. this one was the most helpful. a bit more research and we found out that cats would not eat their food if theycan smell that something’s been mixed into it. they considered it ‘contaminated’. bleh. picky little creatures. i also read that covering the tablets in butter might help it go down smoothly but i thought it would make it too slippery for us to hold. and then there was this brilliant tips of giving a couple of drops of water right after we put the medicine in their mouth so they’re forced to swallow. jackpot!

so saturday, we took baileys into the bathroom. we had a tablet, a glass of water and a plate of her favourite food. we shut the door and MOH held her. i have to say i was quite scared what with me having to put my fingers in her mouth while MOH forced it open. and i didn’t want to get scratched. i knew baileys didn’t really use her claws on her unless she’s slipping from somewhere and trying to get a hold on something to stop herself from falling but still… i thought it would be as bad as trying to bathe them.

anyhooo… first attempt, she spat the tablet right out. she’s a quick one, that little kitty. picked her up again, opened her mouth, put the tablet in, quickly gave her a few drop of water. she made this funny sound because she choked a bit on the water and ran free from MOH’s hands. i watched her for a couple of seconds to make sure she didn’t spit it out again. after a few seconds, i gave her the food so if she still had the tablet in her mouth she would swallow it together with the food. she woudn’t touch the food from the plate so i had to put it on my palm for her. she ate everything. we were pretty sure she swallowed the tablet too.

fatso was a bit easier. we expected her to be a bit more difficult because she got longer limbs and savage looking claws. and she was difficult to held down but it only took us one attempt. the water really did the trick because they couldn’t help but opening their throat for it. fatso got two slices of cheese after the tablet and she looked okay.

having pets really are like having kids. unfortunately, these kids aren’t going to grow up and look after us in our old days :)
